World chess champion Magnus Carlsen has returned to the Worldwide Chess Federation (FIDE) World Fast and Blitz Championships after new guidelines allowed gamers to put on “elegant” denims with jackets.
Carlsen had withdrawn from the New York match when officers demanded he change out of denims he wore after a lunch assembly, threatening him with fines and disqualification. FIDE revised its costume code following the incident, allowing “acceptable denims matching the jacket” as an “elegant minor deviation” from customary apparel.
